Google Business Profile optimization checklist

A step-by-step Google Business Profile optimization checklist for small businesses that want to win the local map pack in 2026.

For a local business, your Google Business Profile is the single most valuable piece of SEO real estate you own, and most owners barely touch it after setup. It is what decides whether you appear in the map pack, the box of three businesses that shows up for searches like "dentist near me". Get it right and you can win local customers before anyone even reaches your website.

This is a practical, step-by-step checklist to optimize your profile, in the order that gets you results fastest. Work through it top to bottom.

Start here: claim and verify

Nothing else matters until you own the profile. Search for your business on Google. If a profile exists, claim it. If not, create one at the Google Business Profile site. Then complete verification, usually by postcard, phone, email, or video. Until you are verified, you cannot edit anything, and an unverified profile is a profile you do not control.

  • Claim or create your profile.
  • Complete verification fully before moving on.
  • If a duplicate profile exists, report it so it can be merged or removed.

Nail the core information

This is the foundation Google uses to understand and trust your business. Accuracy matters more than cleverness here.

Name

Use your real business name, exactly as it appears on your signage and website. Do not stuff keywords into it, such as "Joe's Plumbing Best Emergency Plumber Cheap". That violates Google's guidelines and can get your profile suspended. Your real name, nothing more.

Categories

Your primary category is one of the strongest ranking factors in local search, so choose it carefully. Pick the most specific category that describes your main business, not a broad one. Then add relevant secondary categories for your other services. A bakery that also serves coffee might use "Bakery" as primary and "Coffee shop" as secondary.

Address and service area

If customers visit you, enter your exact address. If you travel to customers, set a service area instead and hide the address. Be consistent: your name, address, and phone number must match exactly across your website and every directory. Inconsistency confuses Google and costs you rankings.

Phone and website

Use a local phone number rather than a call-tracking number where possible, and link to the most relevant page on your site, not always the homepage. A service-area business might link a specific location or service page.

Hours

Set accurate hours and keep them current, including special hours for holidays. Nothing frustrates a customer like driving to a business marked open that turns out to be closed, and Google notices when your hours are unreliable.

Complete every section

A complete profile outranks a half-finished one almost every time. Google rewards businesses that give searchers what they need. Fill in everything:

  • Description. Write a clear, honest 750-character summary of what you do and who you serve. Write it for a human, not as a keyword list.
  • Services and products. List them out with descriptions and prices where it makes sense. This helps you appear for more specific searches.
  • Attributes. Set the relevant ones, such as "wheelchair accessible", "women-owned", or "free wifi". These show up in your profile and in filtered searches.
  • Opening date. Add the date your business opened.

Add photos, and keep adding them

Profiles with photos get significantly more clicks and direction requests than those without. Photos signal that your business is real, active, and worth choosing.

  • Add a recognizable logo and a strong cover photo.
  • Upload real photos of your premises, your team, and your work. Avoid generic stock images.
  • Keep adding new photos over time. A steady stream signals an active business.
  • Use clear, well-lit images. Quality reflects on your business.

Build and manage reviews

Reviews influence both your ranking and whether someone chooses you once they find you. This is ongoing work, not a one-time task.

  • Ask, consistently. The best time to ask for a review is right after you have done good work. Make it easy with a direct review link.
  • Never buy or fake reviews. It is against Google's rules and the fast route to a suspended profile. It also erodes the trust that makes reviews valuable.
  • Respond to all of them. Thank people for good reviews. Respond to negative ones calmly and professionally. How you handle criticism says a lot to future customers.
  • Watch for keywords. When customers naturally mention the service and area in reviews, it reinforces what you rank for. You cannot script this, but good service tends to produce it.

Use posts and Q and A

These two features are underused, which makes them an easy edge.

  • Posts. Publish updates, offers, and news directly to your profile. They appear in your listing and signal an active business. Aim for a post every week or two.
  • Questions and answers. People can ask questions on your profile, and anyone can answer. Seed it yourself with the questions customers actually ask, and monitor it so you can answer new ones before someone else answers wrong.

Keep it alive

Optimization is not a one-time event. Google favors profiles that are maintained. Build these habits:

  • Post updates regularly.
  • Add fresh photos monthly.
  • Respond to every new review promptly.
  • Update hours, services, and information whenever anything changes.
  • Check your insights to see how people find and interact with your profile.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Keyword-stuffing your business name.
  • Inconsistent name, address, and phone number across the web.
  • Choosing a category that is too broad, or the wrong primary category.
  • Ignoring reviews, especially negative ones.
  • Setting it up once and never touching it again.
  • Using stock photos instead of real ones.

The bottom line

Your Google Business Profile is the highest-impact local SEO work you can do, and most of it is within your control. Claim it, complete every section accurately, add real photos, earn and respond to reviews, and keep it active. Done well, it can put you in front of nearby customers at the exact moment they are ready to buy.
